Summary

Imagine a line, and ask yourself where would I stand if that line was Mathematics. At one end we have "yummy yummy, give me more", in the middle where you aren't fussed either way, or other end where in true horror you'd exclaim "Satan, get away from me". If giggling or smiling, give me a call.

Qualifications

  • Mathematics and Education Joint Hons. (Loughborough University)
  • Certificate of Education - Specialism Maths. (Loughborough University)
  • Teaching Certificate {Qualified status} (Department of Education)

Experience

On the Academic front, I have experience of 33 years of teaching and tutoring in many different forms and in different institutions, private and state, religious, and secular. I hold a honours degree in Mathematics and Education and I have qualified teacher status.
I have learned to adapt my approach depending on the child's background and ability, as well as their initial level of commitment and enthusiasm. What works for one child will not necessarily work for all.

Ability wise there may be a need for many approaches: eg. Year 7 student who has come from Primary and still cannot grasp fractions - manipulative's - fraction wall, pizza slices, perhaps some tutorials to watch over the internet eg. Mathematically able student but language a barrier, sit with him and talk through how to 'get rid of the words' and draw the Mathematics out of any given question. Teach how to rephrase book/exam language into everyday language.

Experience on the pastoral side, and using what has been learned from Mental health workshops, and life experiences I know I can make students feel at ease with whatever they perceive to be a problem, in aiding them to find potential solutions as well as being a listening ear. Building relationships is as important as academics in order to allow students to reach their full potential.
Students also respond better to teachers who take time to know them as people and have a genuine interest in their whole self, rather than just the subject they may be teaching.

More

I have home educated my own children through IGCSE and GCSE Exams, and I also have some experience of teaching high functioning students on the spectrum.
