Experience
Over the course of my teaching career I have taught in a wide variety of settings, including both state and independent schools, adult education and giving private tuition. Latterly, until July 2023, I was Curriculum Leader for French in a small, highly successful independent school, obtaining excellent examination results. This included working with a number of pupils who felt more comfortable in a setting outside the state system. During the Covid pandemic I gained extensive experience teaching online as my school was particularly successful in organising this for our pupils.I first started working with Oxford Open Learning/Oxford Home Schooling in 2004 and have since tutored many pupils of all ages based both in the UK and overseas.
More
I'm passionate about learning languages - one of my favourite quotations is "A different language is a different vision of life". I love to share that enthusiasm with my students and I always strive to make my lessons engaging and pleasurable. As a school teacher I built up a reputation for explaining things clearly, for providing variety in lessons and for having high expectations. If a pupil doesn't "get" something then I will find another way to explain it so that they do. I've worked with a number of students who lack confidence or have had issues with anxiety and pride myself on my sympathetic approach.I believe you can acquire so many different skills when learning a language and I aim to help you develop these. In an online lesson, I'm there not just to explain things which you may find a challenging, but also to help you practise skills. In particular, it's an ideal opportunity to practise speaking and listening, not just as your exam approaches but also from the beginning of the course so that you feel confident from the start.
Having had some experience as a distance-learning student myself when I undertook a qualification in translation, I know the challenges it can bring and how important some timely help from a tutor can be.
